My property is 30 kilometers out in ranching country so there's almost always horses pasturing nearby. When there's horses you're bound to find fresh road apples close at hand.
The term "road apples" is new for me, it's something I picked up while discussing self-sustainability with some of my digital friends. Road apples is actually referring to horse manure, which probably doesn't sound so sweet and yummy as just a normal apple.
I know that in my younger days I would never have taken the chance at being caught picking road apples but these days such things don't seem to bother me. It's weird how a person loses the ability to become embarrassed about things as they get older.
I see the benefits in the collection of road apples and know exactly how to use them to get the most out of them. I could buy something almost exactly the same in a store but it would come bagged in plastic and I'd have to pay for it. They're free if I collect them myself and trust me, these apples don't need any type of sanitary packing materials.
Just the other day I had a craving, well, let's say more of a need for some road apples and risked the embarrassment of being caught picking them. I was able to sneakily harvest two 5 gallon buckets of road apples the day I went out collecting them without getting caught.
A half a bucket of road apples under each of four of my trees will sure help them along, but it's for sure that these apples didn't fall from these trees.

My neighbors already think I'm a bit crazy so what would they think if they seen me picking up horse manure...

Haha this is funny. I don't think I could ever get away with doing this. My neighbors already think I'm a bit crazy so what would they think if they seen me picking up horse manure!

Yeah, my husband did same thing few days ago an happily and cheerful He came along to show me about his deed...and well, I just was there staring at those "apples" fully covering the base of my trees and said.."oh...that's so thoughtful of you!!!"...but the view was less pleasant!!!!
