Rather than do research on the internet for this I've decided that I want to ask my audience for their ideas on a little problem I have.
It's a simple problem and it should have a simple solution but I can't think of one off the top of my head.
I like meat! I like bacon, chicken, steak and all of that sort of meaty stuff. I love animals but I don't want to be a vegetarian because I really like meat far too much to give it up.
Please, eating meat or not is not the topic here. I'd like to concentrate on what to do with the byproducts of cooking meat - mainly the fat and oil that comes out of it when you cook it.
Sure, there's bio-diesel but my heart is thankful that I don't eat the amount of meat that it would take to make manufacturing of bio-diesel worth my effort.
There's maybe one or two liters every few months that I'd like to deal with in an earth friendly way (I like bacon with my lentils and beans. I also make a killer fried potatoes that uses bacon too).
I need another idea on what to do with the oil and lard byproducts from the cooking process - please share your ideas with me in the comments section - you don't even have to sign up to leave a comment. Feel free to link to an article you've written about it too!

You can use old bacon grease or oil to start a BBQ. It works really good. Just soak a few cotton balls in it, place them in strategic locations to start your coals and you're off. It smokes a little bit but there's no need for gasoline or other toxic substances to start your BBQ.

I saw this on Mother Nature Network a couple days ago:
"If you happen to compost, I wouldn’t recommend adding any animal-based greases to your compost pile since, like bones and raw meat, it can attract unwanted critters. But to attract wanted critters of the winged and feathered variety, you can cry incorporating bacon grease into a suet cake. If you’re feeling a bit more ambitious, turn all those bacon-based breakfasts into a candle. And if you happen to hold a bacon cook-off at home and end up with large amounts of grease on your hands, contact your local waste management facility to see how it can be properly disposed of. A neighborhood restaurant may even be willing to take it off your hands and recycle it."

I hope that helps!

Wow, that's a great idea Hilary! Thanks for pointing me to it, I would never have thought of that. I'm sure I'll have to tweak a recipe because of the climate where I am, but this is an excellent idea that the birds will really appreciate.
The birds are going to love my property if I do this too. They already flock to the automatic watering system I have. It's funny to watch them come over when the water isn't on and look into the little hole where the water comes out. They really do remember that water comes from that little hole they're looking into.
I'm off to go see how your Desert Greenhouse is going.
